Going Green

USE is committed to reducing its environmental impact. As a small entity we have limited power to put pressure on venues, promoters, cities or  governments. But we believe that together we can make changes happen. Many small steps taken by all of us in the industry and together with our audience, patrons and sponsors will add up. Here are some of the actions we take:

We encourage use of public transport, walking and cycling for our musicians and audience.

On tour we substitute domestic and European flights with train journeys or the use of coaches wherever possible.

We use QR code links for programme notes, and have drastically reduced the printing of flyers and posters. Whenever we print we collaborate with eco conscious local print companies.

Our record label’s BIS album ecopak is a cardboard sleeve made of FSC/PEFC-certified material using soy ink, eco-friendly glue and water-based varnish. While the ecopak is about 20% more expensive to produce than a normal plastic jewel case, it is about a third lighter, reducing carbon emission from transport, by around 95%. Our music is available on all major streaming platforms, cutting transport altogether, though the emissions profile via the energy required to store, deliver, stream and playback the music is still being determined.

For musicians however, the biggest impact and contribution to climate change we can make lies in our art. Music can provide a space to allow tempers to ease, minds to calm, thinking to resume and optimism to flourish. We are all part of a creative ecosystem that can contribute to a sustainable world.
