Music of Sanctuary and Solidarity
Award-winning vocal collective SANSARA join forces with United Strings of Europe and Syrian oud player Basel Saleh to present a powerful sequence of choral and instrumental music on the timely and enduring themes of sanctuary, solidarity and displaced peoples.
With music by renowned Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, the programme will feature the European premiere of Caroline Shaw’s striking To the Hands – a six movement cantata responding to Dietrich Buxtehude’s Ad manus from his Membra Jesu nostri. The concert will also include the world premiere of The Journey by Lebanese composer Houtaf Khoury, commissioned by United Strings of Europe.

Maya Youssef, ‘Queen of the Qanun’ plays music from her latest album Finding Home. The qanun (a 78-stringed plucked instrument from the Middle East) is at the heart of Maya’s evocative soundworld, which is infused with a sense of loss for her Syrian homeland and inspired by a more universal sense of home.

With traditional Scandinavian folk instruments, the Lodestar Trio with UK’s own Max Baillie, will treat us to an evening of Baroque music in folk style, with Bach and other Baroque composers re-imagined for this unique combination. This will be followed by Argentinian Bandoneon player JP Jofre joined by United Strings of Europe and other artists in residence for his own music from South America. This is set to be a memorable evening of musical influences from around the world.
